Big Fish Tale
12:42 p.m. || January 31, 2012

Ever hear about how a tale grows into a rumor that isn't even close to the original truth, because every person who retells it alters it just a tiny bit? I'm watching this in action right now...LOL! Even though it has a serious beginning, it is amusing watching the rumor effect in real life for once. Ah, Facebook. The wonders you create. (Or rather, illuminate.)

My brother-in-law, Nate, who is 15, got his phone stolen at knife point yesterday. In his exact words, he was "out longboarding and these three guys came up to him, and one of them had a knife out so I gave them my phone." The guys then left and performed a similar attack on another guy. Unfortunately, that guy got beat up. Haven't herad anything more on that point.

So my mother-in-law's retelling of this story includes the slight alteration that there were "knives" plural.

And then Nate's great-aunt reposted the story on her page, and she upgraded the attack to a robbing at gun point! Before you know it, Nate is going to end up near death, lying critically injured at the hospital!

The real truth is, Nate is a bit shaken up but okay. I haven't heard whether they caught the guys yet. I think once Nate-o gets over the scare from the attack, he may very much enjoy his 15 minutes of being in the spotlight. :)

But somehow I feel this rumor-growth pattern is going to come back to me as an idea to use in a story or something. :)
