My Mother-in-Law's Parenting Advice
10:03 p.m. || January 01, 2012

I absolutely love my mother-in-law.

Stephen's brother, Tim, and his wife have just had two foster children placed with them whom they hope to eventually adopt. Their children need much work in the area of discipline--as can be expected with children who have had no permanent home in their young lives--and Tim just asked the Facebook world for any parenting advice.

This was my mother-in-law's advice:

1) You cannot pray too hard for your children...and you cannot be the Holy Spirit in their lives. Ask God to change their hearts.

2) Never be afraid of loving your child too much; be afraid of not loving them enough.

3) Remember the root word of "Discipline" is "Disciple". The aim of discipline is instruction in righteousness, not punishment for evil.

4) Extend the same grace to your children that's been extended to you.

5) Finally, never forget that a sovereign God has given you these children in this order at this specific time in your life for your good, their good and His glory. He loves them more than you do and has chosen to care for them through you. Trust His wisdom.

...And remember your Mom is praying for you! :)

She is amazing. I want to be like her.
