Our Muslim Friends and Marriage
12:48 p.m. || November 01, 2012

Hmm... Samira is getting a divorce from her husband, whom she married in September.

Apparently he has hit her twice and "all he wants is money."

...thinking...

Yes. I believe that she is making the right decision. I have seen both her sisters have bad run-ins with men. Sara has been divorced once, and remarried. Soher was engaged to a man, but then they broke off the engagement--apparently he started to show his true colors before the marriage. And I am not entirely surprised that this marriage didn't go so well either.

See, I get this feeling that Muslim parents do not look for the best things when considering whether a man is marriage material or not. I think that, in Islam, the process of deciding on a spouse for your children might be equivalent to Christian parents deciding that a man is good marriage material because he can quote whole chapters of the Bible and attends church once a week. Without considering anything else. And I have a feeling that a lot of Muslim men know that this is how Muslim parents make decisions on marriage, and they take advantage of it. :(

The thing that balances it out is that they are very quick to make a decision for divorce if a man does treat a woman badly after they are married (or engaged, in the case of Soher). It's still not an ideal way of going about marriage, obviously, but I'm glad at least that they have that degree of protection.

Soher is supposedly getting married soon. We'll see how this goes. :/

I sure wish they still lived near us and we still saw them every week.
