Valentine's Week Recap
9:07 p.m. || February 17, 2013

Wow, what a week. Has it really only been 6 days since I posted? Only 3 since Valentine's Day? That's just...insane.

So how do I even write about my week at the shop. I don't even remember what I did each day. :P It was crazy?

I guess I do remember. Thursday, I learned how to take orders and got to know the shop.

Friday, I cleaned flowers all day in the annex to the shop and got to know some of the coworkers. They fed us pizza and birthday cake because it was one of the coworkers' birthday. :)

Monday, I cleaned roses all day. And greened some vases.

Tuesday I don't even remember. I...nothing. Blank. LOL. They fed us pizza again, that's all I remember. I think that might've been the day I did my first dozen roses arrangement, but that was all the arranging I did, besides greening. I think.

Wednesday was the day before Valentine's Day and it was NUTS. I took a lot of orders and helped a lot of customers. I worked 11.5 hours!!!! Crazy! That was the day I did the most arranging. Lots and lots and lots of dozens of roses.

Valentine's Day was a rush. It was really busy, but not quite as busy as the day before. By the end of the day I decided that it reallyreallyreallyreally annoys and irritates me that men wait until the super last second to buy flowers. We had to tell sooooooooooo many guys that we were out of red roses. Some of them were okay with other colors or other arrangements, but a few went elsewhere. I did a few (!!!) on-demand arrangements from people who wanted to pick and choose the flowers instead of picking out pre-made ones in the cooler.

At the end of Valentine's Day we were just about out of flowers, period. So we sold what we had already pre-made, which was a real blessing. I didn't even know we had so many pre-made ones! But while I was in the shop helping customers, half the people hired were over in the annex making arrangements that weren't for any specific orders, but just to have extras on hand.

Another blessing was that I really didn't have to deal with too many difficult customers. That was great. I'm sure it won't always be that way, but it is good to know that even on Valentine's Day there weren't many difficult people.

I won't be staying on, sadly. :( One of the guys who works there is looking for something else. I've realized that a lot of people who work at flower shops don't work there because they love flowers and designing them, but they work there as a filler position. Just an in-between job while they look for better options. That makes me sad. :( But I get it. Floristry isn't a high-paying job, and people need bills paid. But it's still sad. I can't help but think that if more people did floristry because they love floristry, that the industry might be doing better.

So after Valentine's week, we went straight to the coast for the weekend with the marriage ministry team to plan events for the next year. It went well. And it was beautiful out there. The water was the most gorgeous green-blue color I have ever seen.

This weekend is Heidi's wedding... I ordered the flowers Friday and we'll be picking up and doing them Thursday. Friday's the rehearsal and Saturday's the wedding. Definitely nervous! I hope Heidi is happy with the bouquet I have in mind... :/ If not, well, I guess we can pick up more roses at a grocery store.
