My Night at the Crystal Ballroom
12:00 p.m. || August 07, 2007

So, dancing went really well last night. Of course. :) Stephen didn't make any comment at all about the long drive. What was funny was we kind of got lost on the way back, LOL! We kept taking the wrong roads. It was okay, though. I wasn't worried (I was too tired to worry anyway! :D ). We just listened to Caedmon's Call and talked while we tried to find our way back. :) He almost killed me, LOL. We were turning left at a light, and there was a cement barrier down the middle of the road. He thought it was just a sidewalk, I guess, so he turned down to the left of it, but he was turning into the lane for oncoming traffic!!! Freaked me out for a sec, but I managed to get out, "Oh, no! Don't--!" And he realized in the nick of time what he was doing. There was a car coming at us (it had a red light, but still kind scary!). Luckily it was late at night (11:30ish) and it was just the one car there.

Yaaaawwwnn! I am TIRED. I woke up at 8:00 this morning and couldn't get back to sleep. Grr. So I finally got up at nine and started sorting through my boxes to go back to college. I have to sort every summer before the next year starts, 'cause I accumulate stuff while I'm away. :P And I try to downsize every summer, too. I bring way too much stuff to college. I'm getting a lot better at deciding what to take and what to leave, what to keep and what to toss, though.

The ballroom that we danced at yesterday was huge and kinda cool but really dimly lit. The whole building was dimly lit, and quite frankly, it creeped me out a little bit. Or a lot bit. Even the bathrooms were dark. I chose the stall closest to the sink lights whenever I went in, haunted by visions of strangled girls lying in the darkest stalls. :S The ballroom was on the third floor of a building. The second floor was just a kind of (dim, creepy) lobby area. The bottom floor was a bar. It was in a bad part of town, which is why Stephen offered to escort me to the dance. Thank goodness for him. He's awesome, how concerned he is about my safety. He even made me walk on the inside of the sidewalk, and text him when I got home at the end of the night to let him know I got there safely. :) Guys like that are rare and hard to find. I love going to church. :D

There were about 200 people there. The ballroom was big enough that that was actually a pretty comfortable sized crowd, except there wasn't much sitting space. There were seats/benches all along the outer edges of the ballroom but they were crowded and people sat on the stage, too. There was a bar there, but nobody got drunk that I saw. It was kinda sickening smelling it on people's breath when I was dancing with them, though... Ew. I definitely don't care for the smell. :P

There were several people there that I recognized from the Scottish Rite Temple, where I usually go dancing, so that was really cool. Made me feel WAY more at ease! I danced with Alex and Rod and Stephen from the Scottish Rite. A couple of perfect strangers asked me to dance with them, LOL, and then I danced with a few guys I met at the lessons.

There was a Balboa(?! I'd never heard of it!) lesson at 7:30 and a Lindy Hop lesson at 8:00. The Lindy Hop lesson was SO SLOW for me! But with 100 people at varying stages of swing dancing skill, I guess you have to be kind of slow. The only thing that made the Lindy Hope lesson interesting was getting to teach this Arab-American guy who didn't know what he was doing. :) He told me maybe I should teach lessons, LOL.

Stephen doesn't get Lindy Hop, which is too bad. I love it. Plus Stephen always does exactly the same routine with me. :P I wish I could figure out some polite, non-ego-destroying (:D) way of telling him that I'd like to do more than just the regular routine. He did surprise me a few times last night, though (yay Stephen!); once or twice he went into Lindy Hop to give it a try and BOY, that was a rush! LOL! Lindy Hope 8-count steps are way quicker than East Coast 6-count steps, so it's like, one minute you're just going a nice, steady "one, two, triple-step, triple-step; one, two, triple-step, triple-step" and the next you're flying out doing a "one two triple-step one two keep it up! one two triple-step one two keep it up!!" SO fun! ::huge grin:: That was probably one of the best parts of the night, when he took me by surprise there.

Another rush moment was when I was dancing with Alex. Man, that guy goes fast! I think he Lindy Hops, but for some odd reason I can't remember! But he must, because it's so fast. Anyway, he knows lots and lots of so-awesome tricks and cool moves. I LOVE dancing with him. Not only 'cause he knows stuff, but he can teach it, too. When I'm not getting something, he doesn't expect me to just get it as we go along (other girls might, but not this one!), he actually stops me and says, "Okay, this is what I'm doing, and this is what you're doing." THANK YOU ALEX!!! The dance floor needs more people like him. :P He dances with everybody... He never takes a break. He's crazy! I think he's trying to get in shape, though. But seriously, even athletes need breaks! I hope he doesn't give himself a heart attack or something. :S (He's...in his 40s, maybe.)

Stephen taught me to waltz, by the way. That was really cool! I've always wondered! I looked up the steps on the Internet once upon a time and I think the main reason I felt like I wasn't getting it was because it's so simple! It's unbelievably simple. You just make a box on the floor with your feet. Stephen kinda taught me how to do a turn, too--after he told me, "I love the waltz, because it's so mathematical!" I laughed so hard at that. That's great for him, but I'm so not mathematical! LOL. But it went fine. It's just a diagonal step. Again, really really simple. Someone last night--it may have been Stephen--told me that swing dancing is one of the most complicated of dances. After learning the waltz, I sure believe it!

Dancing is so. So. So. So. So. Much fun. :D YAY!!
