20th Century Poets
8:36 p.m. || February 06, 2008

AAH. I need a break from homework! I've been swamped this week. I'm keeping afloat, but barely. At the moment I'm reading my eyes dim and need a break.

I need some tea.

I figured out that T.S. Eliot is one of my favorite poets. So I've got my list up to three now: T.S. Eliot, Robert Frost, and William Wordsworth. I wonder what all those guys have in common that I like them more than others?

Ironically, poetry is something I don't understand very well. Music-oriented and English major that I am, I've learned with my two poetry classes that I really don't get poetry. At least not when I'm asked to read 9 poems and all the biographies of the authors at once. You can't really understand poetry when reading at that rate.

I do NOT like Ezra Pound. Ironic (again), since he and T.S. Eliot were good friends. I don't like Wallace Stevens either. Carl Sandburg is okay, but brutal.

One of the things that the biography pointed out about T.S. Eliot was that he and Ezra Pound had very, very different world views. Pound saw the world as fragmented and incomprehensible, and his poetry reflects that. Eliot looked for continuity and fluidity in the world, and his poetry reflects that. His poetry consists of coherent sentences, but the content is fairly inscrutable sometimes. That's okay with me, though, because the fluidity of his lines makes up for it. I like his subtle rhyming too.

Anyway... I have the rest of Eliot's "Waste Land" to read as well as three of E.E. Cummings' poems and three of Jean Toomer's poems to read. Also an exam to study for. I'm fairly swamped with homework this week, as I said.

So back to T.S. Eliot...
